LISBON — The president of the Maldives called yesterday for urgent global action against climate change, saying rising sea levels threatened the survival of his country’s low-lying islands.

Maumoon Abdul Gayoom said 80 of his country’s 1200 islands had experienced tidal surges this year.

“Never in our documented history have so many islands been affected to such an extent. These surges were a grim reminder of the devastating tsunami of 2004 and a clear warning of future disasters,” Gayoom said in Lisbon.

He was speaking at a three-day conference, known as European Development Days, ahead of what is set to be Europe’s first summit with Africa in seven years, next month. READ MORE FROM

Dear Editor
First of all let me say to my critics that I am neither white nor super rich. The anonymous writer says that the government is too good to foreigners. What a stupid and ignorant and almost racist thing to say. Why should the government not be very good to foreigners, who are the lifeblood to the economy? Most of the workers I have met in the resorts, seem happy and well looked after, with fairly decent accommodation, well fed and with an idyllic work location and this is only possible because of the millions of visitors who come to Paradise Maldives. ..............READ MORE

Mr. McKinnon particularly welcomed the fact that the environment for the referendum was calm; that there was a high voter turn-out; that women were well represented as voters, polling officials and party agents; and that many young people participated. ..............READ MORE

Speaking at a rally after the demonstration held on Saturday, Zuhair (Juha) called upon the MDP leadership to drag the members holding key posts to be made answerable for not turning up to demonstrate.
The demonstration was reportedly held to “catch the rogue” referring to MDP’s allegation that last month’s referendum was rigged. However, the ranting at the rally after the demonstration brought to light that they need to clean up their own backyard first. Members holding portfolios in the MDP parliamentary group like Jesus Afeef and Mohamed Shihab to name a couple, chose not to participate. Perhaps, they preferred to leave it to the cannon fodder in case of a brush with the law. Perhaps, they chose to be out of the country to avoid the demonstration which was tipped off to be a fiasco from the very beginning.............READ MORE
